After requests from modders and gamers alike, we have decided to release the MTX source files for all to use, edit and play with as you wish.

MTX was one of our earlier mods, based on the Matrix, that we abandoned due to timescale issues causing stuttering on dedicated servers. This behaviour was not up to scratch and something we could not bypass, so therefore we moved on to our other COD4 mods.

So for all you modders, tweakers, inquisitors and anybody in general, the saucy source files are now yours to download and look at/improve/learn from. Enjoy!

The MTX source files can be obtained from either of the following places:
http://www.obscurecreations.com/download/mp_mtx_source.rar
http://www.obscuritymod.com/downloads/mp_mtx_source.rar

PS: Anybody who does create something awesome from this or learns a thing or two, we would love to hear from you. We may even write an article about it or link to any Youtube media you may have of any creations you make derived from these source files.

As you are all aware, an awesome game called Skyrim was released in November. You may also be aware that Bethesda are usually pretty decent when it comes to releasing mod tools to help their games thrive with a constant supply of community made modifications.

After spending a huge amount of time playing Skyrim, both Falcar and I have agreed to create some awesome mods for it once the mod tools are released in January. We always strive for quality and polish, which is evident in our previous game mods, so be sure to keep an eye out for some Skyrim mods created by us in the near future. We are already plotting and scheming some awesome mods to make for it.

We wish you all a happy new year!

One of our fans wrote in to the Australian Game Informer magazine to question the reasons why Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 does not allow mods or dedicated servers. Here’s the letter, and the editor’s response.

I am an avid Call of Duty 4 player and I believe what makes a game have such great longevity is its customisable content: this includes maps, mods and skins. Not only is custom content fun – take a look at a terrific total conversion mod called Obscurity – but it can also accommodate game balancing alterations that are used for competition, such as Promod.

Essentially what Infinity Ward has done in the exclusion of mods, map tools and dedicated servers for Modern Warfare 2 is eliminate the longevity of an otherwise good game and ostracise the more hardcore gamers who appreciate the ability to balance their game to community standards. So I have to ask, why do game developers insist on making mod free games? All they are doing is losing money by killing off the hardcore fans that would’ve been there for the long haul.”

Daniel Mackie, Baranduda, VIC

“You don’t have to delve deep into the history of PC gaming to see how important mod flexibility has been to the success of the stalwart franchises. Many games have had lifetimes in excess of ten years: a feat a mod-less game has no chance of achieving. The situation with Black Ops is a strange one: mods and dedicated servers are technically back in business, but Internode are the only Aussie ISPs that can host them. Whether this means you will have to pay something extra to use them, or if Activision will keep a tight leash on all modified content, remains to be seen.”

Chris, Game Informer

We’ve been busy working on a new project – a web-based game server administration console, built to handle multiple game servers and multiple users under a single, user-friendly interface. We’ve affectionately named it RConTroll! Here’s a sneak peek…

Current features include:

Add as many game servers as you like, each with as many games as you like.

You can have multiple different games installed on the one game server, and switch between them with a couple of button presses!

Console and command-line access *

Game status/summary access *

Log file access *

Edit config files directly in the browser

Upload additional files directly from your browser

Realtime status of which games are running on each server

Starting and stopping servers, as well as ‘killing’ servers that are not responding

Planned features not yet implemented are:

easy install plugins – just install the game, then the RConTroll plugin, and you’re ready to start using it!

user-level fine-grained permissions – allow access only to certain parts of your servers, eg. one user can start and stop the server, but cannot change config files

integrated billing system – allow all of your users to contribute to a monthly bill amount. You can even set the amount to add up to a profit if you desire!

We’d like some users to test out our Alpha release, and give us feedback on where we could improve it. Please post in the comments if you’d like to participate.

In addition, we’d like to hear from anyone on what games you’d like to see supported. Games must support dedicated Linux servers (if in doubt please suggest anyway).

Currently supported games:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

Counter Strike: Source

Ventrilo

* not all games support all features

It’s dark out there. The evenings are creeping in, which means there’s never been a better excuse to play more games. Probably a good thing CoD4′s next Game Night is here, and since it lands near Halloween I’ve found a rather spooky mod for us to play…

If you can recall the situation that the marines found themselves facing during the original Predator film – before the franchise degenerated into silly alien deathmatches – and you’ll have a good idea what Obscurity Mod is all about.
“Just the perfect mod if you love gore and blood all over the walls after you have just blown one across a room! Obscurity allows players to either play as a marine, with the odds pitted against them, or play as an Obscurity, a creature created to hunt down and destroy its prey. Some features unique to Obscurity include: Locational Knife Damage, Directional HUD Blood Spatter, Burning Players with Directional Flame, Day/Night Progressive Cycles, Unique Gameplay & Gamemodes, Unique Obscurity Weapons, All New Perks & Perk 4 Category, Enhanced/Balanced Marine Weaponry, Enhanced Sounds of Battle, Obscurity Taunts, Fully Implemented Squad Creation Feature, Fully functional Pyro & Flamethrower in VIP, *No HUD*”
